How to Start a Campfire

Campfires are a beloved part of the camping experience, and at Jellystone Park Pelahatchie, we provide designated fire rings at campsites and cabins that are perfect for building them. In this blog post, we’ll give you some tips on how to start a campfire in one of these designated areas. Follow these steps, and you’ll be roasting marshmallows and enjoying the great outdoors in no time!

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Start a Campfire
  1. Find the designated fire ring at your campsite or cabin. These are usually made of metal or stone and intended for the safe and controlled burning of campfires.
  2. Gather the materials you’ll need before continuing the steps on how to start a campfire. You’ll need some kind of fuel (such as wood, paper, or kindling) and a way to ignite it (such as matches or a lighter). We’ve got you covered on firewood! Just stop at the Ranger Stationand gather some bundles.
  3. Clear any debris or flammable materials from the area around the fire ring.
  4. Build your fire using the “teepee” method. Start by placing a few larger logs in the center of the pit. Then, stack smaller logs or twigs around the larger logs in a teepee shape. Leave some space between the logs to allow for airflow.
  5. Add tinder (such as dry leaves, grass, or paper) to the center of the teepee.
  6. Light the tinder using matches or a lighter. Be sure to light the tinder from the bottom up, as this will help the fire catch and spread.
  7. Once the fire is burning well, you can add more fuel to keep it going. Be sure to use caution when adding fuel, as the fire may flare up unexpectedly.
Always Practice Safety & Above All Enjoy Yourselves

Now that you know how to start a campfire safely, it’s equally important to understand how to put out the fire properly. When you’re finished with your campfire, douse it with water and stir the ashes to ensure that all embers are extinguished. We wish you a great time with family and friends around the campfire at Jellystone Park Pelahatchie! Happy camping!
